Crime 101

Posted: May 30th, 2008 | Filed Under: Annoyances, Current Events |

One key to being a successful criminal is to be smarter than your prey. This guy failed miserably.

I saw he had a khaki hat with ADT on it, Jackie Baldwin-Doakes said. When I opened the door, he said he was with GE and he said nothing about ADT.

All I’m going to tell any would-be burglars about my home is that I have a gun and I know how to use it. And to quote Seth Gecko (George Clooney’s character in From Dusk Til Dawn), [i]f you try to run, I’ve got six little friends and they can all run faster than you can.

Took a co-worker out for a birthday drink tonight at Catbird’s in The Montrose. Sat on the patio and had a couple of Baileys .. neat. Just got home.

Name That Tune!

I have a Nokia N800 Internet Tablet, which I bought last September to replace my Nokia 770 that ended up drowning in my handbag (don’t ask!). Since I got my Treo 700P, and loaded it to the gills with e-books, I haven’t used my Nokia too much and kind of forgot about it. While cleaning the house this weekend, I found it on a bookshelf. For some reason, I started searching YouTube for info on the new OS2008 (which I’d heard had problems). Anyway, I found this video. And here’s my question. Does anyone know the name of the song being sung at the beginning of the video clip? All the lyrics I can make out are … he’s gonna leave me … all by myself. Thanks and hugs and kisses and undying devotion (and anything else you wanna work out with me) to anyone who can answer this. I’ve Googled and Napstered and just can’t locate anything.

Thanks for posting that other great video! And thanks for providing the answer, Moby, In This World. :-)

Eurovision 2008

From my friend in Belgrade… thanks, Petar, for the pictures and narrative!

Serbian Pride at Eurovision 2008

Russia’s Dima Bilan won the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest held in Belgrade. Maria Serifovic, last year’s winner from Serbia, handed him the flowers. Next year, Moscow will host the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time ever. An unusual thing is that Bilan sang barefoot and (almost) shirtless. In Russia, he has already become a national hero.

The Eurovision fireworks in Belgrade were spectacular – at Branko’s bridge, Kalemegdan, in front of the City Hall, outside the Belgrade Arena, and even inside the Belgrade Arena.

Fireworks in Belgrade, Serbia, for Eurovision 2008

Thousands of people partied in front of the Belgrade City Hall. Eurovision 2008 was held on the 20th, 22nd, and 24th of May in Belgrade and about 20,000 foreigners came to the Serbian capital, and Belgrade became a city of major social events for those few days. All this took place at the White Palace, at the Communist-styled building known now as the Palace of Serbia (Palata Srbije – ex-Palata federacije), at the Sava Center, and at various embassies and clubs. Everyone had a good time and no incidents were reported.

Eye’s Feelin’ Bad

Posted: May 25th, 2008 | Filed Under: About Me |

I don’t know what the problem is but it started last night. My eyes began to hurt like mad, and what’s worse, I became nauseated. Threw up even. I had to lay down for several hours in the dark, with just some smooth jazz playing, an herbal sleeping mask, and my faithful cat at my side. It was several hours before the waves of nausea subsided. I felt a bit better today, but just spent only a few hours in front of the computer. I think (hope) all I need is a new eyeglass prescription. I am hoping that the optical shop is open tomorrow (holiday here). If not, it will have to wait until Tuesday. But I really didn’t want to spend my days off laying in bed in the dark (at least not by myself!).

He Won’t Stand For It

Posted: May 25th, 2008 | Filed Under: About Him, Annoyances |

I was out in the car yesterday running some errands. On the way back, while waiting in traffic, there was a guy on the median (esplanade). He was in a wheelchair. I could see that his left leg was amputated just below the bend in his knee. He didn’t appear to have a leg bag so I assume he was in the wheelchair due to the amputation. And of course, he was panhandling.

I started thinking about that and it made me angry. Because Robert is in a wheelchair too, but for different reasons. He’s paralyzed. He has both his legs, but they are basically useless now. He has to self-cath and when he goes out in public he wears a leg bag. Pretty inconspicuous, unless you know where to look and what to look for. Also has to do manual bowel routine every other day.

And it kind of made me angry that this guy was out there looking for money. Unless he was raising it to buy a prosthesis. And if he were to have one of those, well, he wouldn’t need the wheelchair. So his mobility problem is solved, right? I must have been thinking and concentrating so hard that I didn’t see the guy wheel up to me. Next thing you know, he thrust his can through my open car window. Thankfully the light turned green and I sped off. Leaving the guy in the chair to wonder what my last thought was.

The Power Tool Video All Men Have Been Waiting For

Posted: May 24th, 2008 | Filed Under: Video |

If men loved power tools before… they’re gonna love them even more now. The biggest departure from reality in this video, besides the models, is the fact that the amount of noise these tools generate can be deafening! Now I don’t play around with power tools, but I will tell you that after mowing the lawn, I too am glistening with sweat. But I’m not wearing Daisy Dukes, a scanty bra top and CFM shoes. I’m likely wearing leggings, a tee shirt and my favorite Reeboks; and covered from head to toe not in suntan oil but Off!. And there’s not one glamorous thing about me after I come in from mowing the yard and flop down in a chair like a limp, wet dishrag.

Enjoy!

Down for the Count

It’s never a good thing when you set up a new client’s hosting account, launch his site, publicize the launch on your own web design site (hosted at the same place as the client’s new account). And then get this shit:

Firefox can't find the server at pixelita.com

I’ve not been happy with my web host for a few months now. This blog is set up at a different server and I’m seriously thinking about moving my web design site here. I just hate giving up that nice WHM account and cPanel for my clients. But what good is it if they can’t access it?

Think Pink, Pearls and Stone.

I’ve been listening to Alecia Moore (a/k/a P!nk) ever since she first arrived on the scene. I’ve always loved her edgy voice. Here she is in a great tribute to Janis Joplin.

And listening to Joss Stone also reminds me a bit of Janis. Now, I could have taken the easy way out and posted “Piece of My Heart,” the duet she did with Melissa Etheridge. But I much prefer this song for its polish. See for yourself.

And of course, there’s the Pearl herself:
