Saturday Morning

Posted: February 25th, 2006 | Filed Under: Uncategorized |

My brother turned me onto Mystic Moods Orchestra. It’s an acquired taste to be sure, but I find the music very relaxing and restful. This track is called Come Saturday Morning, from the album Stormy Weekend (1970).

A Stand for Democracy

Posted: February 22nd, 2006 | Filed Under: Uncategorized |

The U.S. clearly has lost sight of who is the underdog in the cartoon jihad. But Christopher Hitchens gets it right:

And there remains the question of Denmark: a small democracy, which resisted Hitler bravely and protected its Jews as well as itself. Denmark is a fellow member of NATO and a country that sends its soldiers to help in the defense and reconstruction of Iraq and Afghanistan. And what is its reward from Washington? Not a word of solidarity, but instead some creepy words of apology to those who have attacked its freedom, its trade, its citizens, and its embassies. For shame.

For shame indeed.

Leave it to the Nigerians to do it up right. Sigh.

Miami Port First to File Suit to Halt Takeover

Posted: February 18th, 2006 | Filed Under: Uncategorized |

Michelle Malkin reported the lack of concern regarding the proposed management of six of the United States’ major ports by a Saudi-controlled agency.

The Port of Miami has now drawn its line in the sand.

I’d wondered from the first time I read about this which six ports were involved. This story names them: New York, New Jersey, Baltimore, New Orleans, Miami and Philadelphia. Did I read that right? New York? New York has already experienced terrorism of unparalleled proportions. How can any New Yorker not in a coma or living at the bottom of a well not be up in arms over this prospect? New Orleans? It’s still reeling from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and, hot on her heels, Rita.

Perhaps this lawsuit is the catalyst that will prompt the other Port Authorities to legal action. Especially if Miami is successful in stopping this, even temporarily, while the powers that be come to their senses.

New Jersey lawmaker Frank LoBiondo (R), chairman of the Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation Subcommittee, cited “significant” security worries over the sale to Dubai Ports World. He has proposed a bill that would amend federal maritime laws to require facility security officers, which operate at terminals in every U.S. port, to be American citizens. LoBiondo said there are presently no citizenship requirements, which he said permits foreign companies who are or become partners in domestic terminal operations to employ security officers who are not Americans.

We cannot be lax about our nation’s security nor fail to recognize that our ports are realistic targets of terrorists.

This kind of comes under the category, “No Shit, Sherlock!”

I can take my right wrist in my left hand and my thumb and middle finger will touch each other. But if I take my left wrist in my right hand, the fingers don’t touch. Are the fingers on my right hand too short or is my left wrist too big?

For any fan of Gilbert Shelton’s Furry Freak Brothers and Fat Freddy’s Cat comics, word has it that there’s a Furry Freak Brothers movie in the works, with Gilbert Shelton taking the artistic reigns of the film.

Link Stink

My friend, Rori points out the sheer number of MSN Spaces blogs that appear in this New York magazine article on Linkology. Just for the record, only six[1] of these top 50 appear on my blogroll (and that includes all the other blogs I have). Further, I don’t consider A List Apart to be a blog, but just a CSS resources web site. Thirdly, I am dismayed that Howard Bashman’s How Appealing is less popular than the cited Power Line, a blawg I’ve never heard of. Finally, I’m also surprised that Chris Pirillo’s blog didn’t make the top 50.

[1] Okay, they are: MIchelle Malkin, Dooce, Gizmodo, Engadget, ThoughtMechanics, and A List Apart, and those last two only on my web design site.

Dick Cheney must have wondered the same thing. While quail hunting here in Texas, he managed to bag himself a lawyer. Not just any lawyer, mind you, but “Harry Whittington, a millionaire attorney from Austin.” Whittington is recuperating in a Corpus Christi hospital and is expected to recover fully from what is probably just a flesh wound. His wife witnessed the whole thing from the safety of the couple’s parked car.

Garter snap to Michelle Malkin.

Do They Get It Yet?

Are the Muslims starting to catch on that it’s okay to poke fun a bit, because we Westerners enjoy free speech and freedom of the press? Do they now understand that such things can be done in the name of freedom of expression and that no one’s embassy is going to be torched because someone Photoshopped (and badly I might add) this?

One can only hope. Unfortunately, I don’t think the noble explanation is the correct one. Instead, it’s more likely that they are just baiting, for the sake of it. That the whole time these fundamentalist Muslim clerics have been loudly complaining [I'm not providing links; that's what Google is for; use it] that an apology is not enough for the “heinous” and “vicious” crime that was perpetrated on the Muslim people and their (not MY) Prophet, but that **blood** — anyone’s — must be shed and now, these Muslims can do what amounts to the same thing and get away with it.

They will “get away with it” because the Western way works and this insanity does not, because it doesn’t have a logical leg to stand on. Does anyone know what the Islam (?) word is for “tolerance”? Anyone? Anyone?

Political cartoonist Chip Bok took a jab at CNN’s pixelation of the 12 now infamous cartoons. Now you’d think the first group to get their knickers in a twist over this would be broadcasting giant CNN. But NOOOOO! Guess who Bok has offended the worst? Anyone? Anyone?

And as for mocking religion? Christopher Hitchens got it right. Oh, and Professor Glenn Reynolds told off CNN but good!.
